During the last century, this seaside town, considered as the pearl of Versilia, has become a tourist attraction appreciated and known worldwide. To the north, this location is embraced by the astonishing Apuan Alps and to the south by a coastal zone with very fine sand; in fact, Forte dei Marmi has transformed part of its original environment into marvellous gardens, vegetable gardens and fields rich with villas and hotels immersed in the greenery, maintaining its relationship with nature that domineeringly imposes itself.
Forte dei Marmi is a city rich in history. It started to greatly expand as from the 16th century. In the 19th century, once the construction of the Forte (the fortress) was completed and from which the town took its name, it became a seaside resort attracting tourists from all parts of Italy due to the beauty of its beaches as well as the nature trails throughout the surrounding areas. It soon became a society life destination with restaurants, discos and boutiques capable of attracting tourists and fashion-lovers. However, the sea is not the only attraction in Forte dei Marmi. The hinterland is in fact extremely rich in history, culture, ancient traditions that unwind by means of nature trails that take you to discover the Apuan Alps and the countryside in the province of Lucca.
The nearby town of Pietrasanta, the capital of artistic marble workmanship appeals to artists and tourists from all parts of the world, who are fascinated by its sea and the Apuan Alps landscapes. The beauty of the historical town centre blends perfectly with the marble craftsmen's and artists' workshops, with the bronze foundries and with the workshops where mosaics and paintings are created. A trip to Pietrasanta during a holiday in Versilia must not be missed.
