The Maremma is also famous for the marvellous sea and its costline where rocky cliffs alternate with sandy beaches. The water here is one of the cleanest in Italy and the 160 km of splendid coastline offer a large range of landscapes and several activities to do.
The large and accessible sandy shore of the Gulf of Follonica, it's the perfect place for people who love the sea and the nature without forgoing bathing establishment, café and restaurants.
Cala Violina and Cala Martine are two wonderful coves where relax yourself and enjoy the beautiful colours of the sea.
Flowering beaches, sandy dunes, pine forests and brackish marshes succeed one another interspersed by coves hosting charming tourists ports such as Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala and Marina di Grosseto.. Castiglione della Pescaia, is among the best known seaside resorts in the country, appreciated both at home and abroad. It is known for its castle and medieval quarter that dominate the town and the canal port. Punta Ala is one of the best equipped seaside resorts with high quality hotels and a tourist port that is among the most complete and modern in the Mediterranean.
The southern part of Maremma costiline is called Argentario (silver Coast) its name derives from Monte Argentario, an island with a rocky coastline rising from the sea. Now connected to the the mainland by two sand banks, Monte Argentario is a very fashionable resort attracting the famous in Italy, with fishing villages of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole as its main attractions.
Don't forget about the Arcipelago Toscano a collection of beautiful islands, the most important islands are Giglio and Giannutri. The former is the larger island, it has wild granite coast, broken here and there by cultivated terraces. Giglio's port is a picturesque docking surrounded by high grounds full of vineyards.
Giannutri instead is a very small island paradise, it is 500m large and more or less 5kms long, a beautiful walk. It is the ideal place for excursions and is attended especially by ski divers charmed by its depths
In the past Giannutri had already charmed the Romans who built there a port and beautiful patrician villa, Villa Domizia.
Along the Maremma costline it's possible to charter sailing or motor yachts and rent wind-surf boards, enjoy water-skiing and underwater fishing. Sailing, motor boating and scuba diving schools are available for all levels. The highly professional diving centers offer the chance to discover and explore the animated and colourful sea bed.
